AI Chatbot for Wix: Wix Chat Is Not a Chatbot (and What to Do About It)

Wix already gives you a chat box. That is why this decision confuses people. Wix Chat puts a bubble on your site and routes messages to your inbox — but there is a human at the end of it, and that human is you. An AI chatbot is a different thing: it answers, on its own, at eleven at night. Here is how to add one to a Wix site, what changes when you do, and the requirement that stops the install.

The short version

  • Wix Chat is a live inbox, not a chatbot. It notifies you. It does not answer.
  • To add a third-party AI chatbot you use Custom Code, in Settings under Development & integrations.
  • Custom Code needs a published site with a connected domain. On a free Wix site with a wixsite.com address, you cannot add it. Checked on Wix’s support documentation, 15 August 2026.
  • An AI chatbot answers from what is published on your site, so what you have written matters more than which tool you pick.
  • Holp installs by snippet and starts at £25 a month.

Wix Chat versus an AI chatbot

Worth being precise, because the two get sold as the same thing.

Wix Chat AI chatbot
What happens when someone asks a question It lands in your Wix Inbox It gets answered
Out of hours An automated “we will get back to you” A real answer
Where the answer comes from You, typing Your published site content
Cost Included with Wix Separate subscription
Best for Genuine conversations you want to have The same twenty questions you keep answering
Fails when You are busy, asleep, or on a job The answer is not written down anywhere

Neither replaces the other cleanly. Wix Chat is fine if your volume is low and you enjoy answering. It stops being fine at the point where you are typing the same reply about parking, or opening hours, or whether you cover Bristol, for the fourth time this week — and worse, at the point where people are leaving without asking because it is a Sunday.

The uncomfortable number in all of this is the questions that never reach you at all. Most visitors with a doubt do not ask. They close the tab. Neither an inbox nor a bot fixes that if the answer is not on your site, which is why the content work below matters more than the tool choice.

How to add an AI chatbot to Wix

Two things must be true first: your site is published, and you have a domain connected to it. A free Wix site on a wixsite.com address cannot use Custom Code, which means it cannot take a third-party chat widget. If that is you, connecting a domain is the step before anything else.

  1. Open your site’s dashboard and go to Settings.
  2. Under Development & integrations, click Custom Code.
  3. Click to add custom code and paste your chat snippet.
  4. Set it to load on all pages, and place it in the body – end position.
  5. Give it a name you will recognise in six months, such as “Holp chat widget”.
  6. Apply, then open your live site in a private browsing window to check the bubble appears.

Body-end rather than head matters: it keeps the script from competing with your page content for load time, and Wix sites are rarely light to begin with.

Turn one of them off

If you add an AI chatbot, switch Wix Chat off. Two chat bubbles in the same corner is a bad experience and an easy thing to miss, because you will be looking at your site logged in where the second one may not render. Check on a phone, logged out, before you call it done.

What the bot can actually read

This is where Wix sites have a particular weakness. Wix makes it easy to build beautiful pages out of elements that a machine cannot read, and easy to leave pages out of your navigation.

On your Wix site Readable by an AI? Fix
Normal text in a text element Yes None needed
Text baked into an image or a banner No Retype it as text. Helps your search rankings too.
A price list uploaded as a PDF Rarely Put the prices on a page
Wix Bookings availability No The bot can link to booking. It cannot see free slots.
Wix Stores product descriptions Usually, if published Make sure descriptions are filled in, not blank
A hidden page not in your menu Often not Link it, or accept the bot will not know it
Wix Blog posts Yes Genuinely useful source material for answers

The single highest-value thing you can do before installing any chatbot is write a proper FAQ page as plain text. Not an image. Not a PDF. Text. It is the source most AI tools lean on hardest, and it takes an hour.

To see what an AI would actually find on your site as it stands, run our answerability check. It reads your public pages and reports which common questions you have covered.

Wix sitemaps

Wix creates a sitemap automatically at /sitemap.xml. You do not need to build one, but you should know what is in it, because a page missing from your sitemap is a page an AI crawler may never see. Hidden pages, pages excluded from search, and pages you only share by link are the usual absentees.

Check yours with our sitemap extractor and confirm it is well-formed with the sitemap validator. If a page you rely on for answers is not listed, that is your first job.

What it costs

If you are already on a Wix Premium plan with a domain, the chatbot is your only new cost. If you are on a free site, add the Wix plan to the sum — it changes the decision and you should count it honestly.

Chat tools at small-business scale generally run £20 to £100 a month. Free tiers exist, usually with branding and a hard conversation cap. Be careful with pricing that bills per resolved conversation: on a site with real traffic that number moves faster than a seat-based plan, because every browsing visitor asking about opening hours is billable. The models are compared in what a chatbot actually costs.

Holp starts at £25 a month. See pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a chatbot to a free Wix site?

No. Custom Code requires a published site with a connected domain, so a free site on a wixsite.com address cannot take a third-party chat widget. You would need to connect a domain first.

Is Wix Chat a chatbot?

No. Wix Chat is a live chat inbox — messages come to you and you reply. It can send an automated greeting, but it does not answer questions on its own.

Should I run Wix Chat and an AI chatbot together?

Not in the same corner of the screen. Pick one visible widget. Two bubbles is confusing, and visitors will use whichever one they hit first.

Where do I paste the code?

Settings → Custom Code, set to load on all pages, in the body – end position.

Can a chatbot take bookings on Wix?

Not directly from your site content. It can explain how booking works and link people to your Wix Bookings page, but it cannot see availability or reserve a slot.

Will it work on Wix Studio or Editor X sites?

Snippet-based widgets sit above your site rather than inside it, so they generally work wherever you can add custom code. Check the custom code section exists in your dashboard before subscribing to anything.
