Chatbase Alternative: An Honest Comparison With Holp

Short answer: Chatbase is the better choice if you are a developer building AI into your own product and you want a hosted retrieval layer with an API. Holp is the better choice if you want a finished thing your non-technical colleagues can run, without counting message credits or paying to remove someone else’s branding from your own website.

Chatbase is a good building block. It is not really a product for a business owner, and it does not try to be.

Pricing checked 15 August 2026. All figures are taken from each provider’s own published pricing page on that date and are quoted in the currency they publish in. Prices change — check the source before making a decision.

Where Chatbase is genuinely better

The API and developer experience

If you want to embed an AI agent inside your own application, trigger it programmatically, or build something custom on top, Chatbase gives you that. Holp has no public API today. If you are a developer, this alone may decide it.

The free tier

Chatbase has a genuine free plan for experimenting, with the caveat that agents are deleted after 14 days of inactivity. Holp has a 30-day trial and then a paid plan.

Flexibility

Chatbase is less opinionated. If you want to wire your own logic around the retrieval layer, that is possible in a way it is not with a finished product.

Where Holp wins

1. Message credits are hard to budget for

Chatbase bills in message credits, not conversations. One customer exchange consumes several credits, and how many depends on the length of the exchange. Translating “we get about 400 enquiries a month” into a credit figure takes arithmetic, and the answer is usually higher than expected. Overspend recharges at $40 per 1,000 credits.

Holp bills per conversation. One chat session is one conversation, however many questions it contains. A visitor asking six follow-ups costs the same as one asking once, which means depth is free.

2. Seat caps

Chatbase caps seats: two on Hobby, three on Standard, five on Pro. For a small business where the manager, the person on reception and whoever writes the website content all need visibility, that is a real constraint rather than a detail.

Holp includes unlimited team members on every plan.

3. Branding on your own site

Removing Chatbase branding from the widget on your website costs $1,188 a year. That is more than four years of Holp’s entry plan, for the privilege of not advertising your supplier to your own customers. Holp does not charge for this.

4. It is a finished product

Holp is built for the person who has to run it, not the person who has to build it. Knowledge, tone, branding, lead capture, notifications, conversation review and knowledge-gap reporting are all in the product, and none of them require a developer.

5. UK company, UK-hosted

For UK charities, schools and healthcare practices this is often a procurement requirement rather than a preference.

Which should you choose?

Choose Chatbase if you are a developer, you need an API, you are embedding AI into your own product, or you want to experiment for free before committing.

Choose Holp if you want a working assistant on your website this afternoon, you want predictable per-conversation billing, you need more than a handful of colleagues to have access, or you would rather not pay to remove branding.

Do not choose Holp if you need an API or you are building AI into your own application. We do not have a public API today, and telling you otherwise would waste your time.

Check what your site can answer first

Whichever you choose, the quality of the answers depends on your content, not the platform. Our free Site Answerability Check reads your website and reports which of the questions visitors typically ask are answered and which are not. About a minute, no account needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a message credit and a conversation?

A conversation is one chat session with a visitor, however long. A message credit is consumed per message, so a single conversation typically uses several. Credit-based pricing makes budgeting harder because your bill depends on how chatty your visitors are.

What does Chatbase cost in 2026?

Free with 50 credits, Hobby $32/month with 700 credits and 2 seats, Standard $120/month with 4,000 credits and 3 seats, Pro $400/month with 15,000 credits and 5 seats, plus Enterprise. Extra credits are $40 per 1,000 and removing branding is $1,188/year. Checked 15 August 2026 against Chatbase’s published pricing.

Does Holp have an API?

Not a public one today. If an API is a requirement, Chatbase is the better fit and we would rather say so.

Can non-technical staff run Holp?

That is what it is designed for. Adding knowledge, changing the tone, reading conversations and fixing gaps are all done in the product. The only technical moment is pasting one snippet into your website.
